Self-help group "Living with tuberculosis"

19.9.2023

Having tuberculosis brings with it both physical and psychological challenges. With the project "Living with tuberculosis" ( https://mit-tuberkulose-leben.de/ ), Carolin Fuchs has created a platform for information about the disease, which also offers those affected the opportunity to exchange ideas at regular meetings as part of a self-help group.

Carolin Fuchs was in the middle of preparing for her A-levels when she was diagnosed with open pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) in May 2012 after months of complaints and countless visits to the doctor. She still doesn't know where she got it from. The diagnosis marked the beginning of an exhausting journey with physical and emotional challenges for the then 18-year-old. During her treatment, she not only experienced rejection and rejection from friends and acquaintances, but also often had to justify herself to medical staff. Her search for self-help or contact with other sufferers was unsuccessful, not least because the linguistic and cultural backgrounds of TB sufferers are very diverse. Ms. Fuchs therefore decided to set up a group for sufferers and relatives herself. She wants to offer a space for the mutual exchange of personal experiences and information on dealing with TB treatment. With the project, she also wants to help counteract the stigmatization of sufferers by the private and professional environment and sensitize society as well as medical staff to the psychological burdens of patients.

The "Living with tuberculosis" group is aimed at all those involved and affected, including former sufferers, newly diagnosed people, as well as relatives and those seeking advice. The group meets online every 1st Sunday of the month at 7 pm. It is possible to contact Ms. Fuchs at any time, even if you do not wish to participate in the group and even anonymously.
