Obligation to report by doctors

In Germany, every case of tuberculosis and death from tuberculosis must be reported, even if there is no bacteriological evidence. The discontinuation or refusal of anti-tuberculosis therapy must also be reported to the responsible health authority. If the pathogen is detected, an additional report is made by the relevant laboratory.

Communication with the health authority

Please also note that further information must be submitted to the responsible health authority:

  • Information about transfer or discharge from hospital
  • Support with contact tracing
  • Communication of resistance and therapy resultsInformation about relevant changes (e.g. moving away, lack of patient cooperation, etc.)
  • Arrangement for supervised therapy

Responsible health authority

As a rule, the public health department in whose district the person concerned has or last had their main residence or in whose district the person concerned usually resides if a main residence cannot be determined is responsible. Entering the zip code in the RKI zip code tool will take you to the contact details of the responsible health authority.
Please note that there may be regional differences in responsibility.

Reporting of therapy results

The treatment results are recorded in a standardized manner according to the criteria of the Robert Koch Institute and are requested by the health authorities from the treating physicians after 12 months at the latest. This information is of great importance for tuberculosis surveillance in terms of checking the quality of treatment in Germany. Treatment discontinuation must also be reported in accordance with Section 6(2) IfSG.
