Do I have to stay in hospital for the entire duration of the treatment?

It is often necessary to start treatment for tuberculosis in hospital. As long as the tuberculosis is still infectious, contact with other people is only permitted with a face mask and is kept separate from other patients in hospital (isolation).

The extent to which further outpatient treatment is possible once the symptoms have improved and the medication is well tolerated must be agreed with the responsible health authority. This is usually the case after a few weeks. Doctors in private practice or tuberculosis outpatient clinics can then continue the treatment on an outpatient basis.
