Statement: Testing for tuberculosis in refugee children and adolescents from Ukraine
Children are a particularly vulnerable group in the detection and treatment of tuberculosis (TB), as they are usually infected through close contact with sick members of their household. The exact prevalence of TB in children from Ukraine is given as 8.8 per 100,000 inhabitants in a 2017 survey. However, due to the high number of refugees, a relevant proportion of latently infected and sick people must be expected. Multiple factors such as war, the resulting flight and living in confined spaces increase the risk of infection in children. In collaboration with the Guideline for Tuberculosis in Children and Adolescents working group and the German Central Committee against Tuberculosis (DZK), a recommendation for TB testing in refugee children and adolescents was drawn up.
